A new multisensory exhibition invites visitors to experience the hidden world of soil through art, science, and all five senses.

Wageningen, 20 August 2026 - “Unseen: The World of Soil”, a new multisensory exhibition presented by the Horizon Europe project CURIOSOIL and hosted by ISRIC, will open on 1 September at the ISRIC World Soil Museum in Wageningen. Running until February 2027, the exhibition brings together contemporary art and soil science to reveal the hidden life beneath our feet through a series of multisensory experiences.

More than 60% of European soils are currently in poor health due to erosion, pollution, compaction, and unsustainable land use. The European Union's new Soil Monitoring and Resilience Directive has made soil health a policy priority. Unseen focuses on helping people reconnect with soil through direct experience.

Before we can protect, restore or value soil, we may first need to learn to perceive it differently. Art can create emotional connections that complement scientific understanding, opening new ways of experiencing the natural world.

The exhibition creates an environment in which visitors do not simply observe soil as a distant scientific object, but encounter it as a living, sensory, and vulnerable world.

Designed to captivate all ages, the exhibition also offers dedicated interactive materials for children aged 6 and up, and deeper engagement for ages 8 to 12 making it an inspiring experience for families and school groups alike. Through six multisensory artworks, visitors are invited to listen to underground soundscapes, feel soil vibrations through bone-conduction technology, touch sculptural installations inspired by microscopic soil structures, explore edible earths and clays, and discover the remarkable biodiversity that sustains healthy soils.

  • If I Were a Nematode, Eco-Acoustics (Dario Calderone & Maaike van der Linde): feel underground vibrations through bone-conduction technology and experience soil by listening with the body rather than the ears.

  • Museum of Edible Earth, Dr. masharu: discover edible soils and clays from around the world through observation, smell, and selected tasting experiences.

  • Soil Soundscapes, Marcus Maeder: compare the acoustic signatures of healthy and environmentally stressed soils, revealing the hidden sounds of ecological change.

  • Underground Nightsky, Lucia Moreno Spiegelberg: discover an immersive landscape inspired by the dung beetle, celebrating nutrient cycling and the regenerative processes of soil.

  • Soil Whisperers, Ninette Koning: gently touch a sphere inspired by the hidden structure of soil, where subtle sounds and light reveal the invisible life whispering back to you.

  • In the Spaces, the Stories, Poppy Flint: explore tactile forms based on microscopic soil scans, showing how different farming practices shape soil health over time.

Together, the installations transform scientific research into sensory experiences that invite visitors to see, hear, touch, smell, and even taste, the complexity of the underground world.

Soils are all around us, yet they frequently go unnoticed. By sparking curiosity, this exhibition seeks to enhance awareness and appreciation for soils through interactive storytelling, helping visitors explore and connect with the fascinating world of soils.

Following its presentation in Wageningen, Unseen: The World of Soil will travel to Fábrica Centro Ciência Viva de Aveiro, Portugal, before becoming available to other venues across Europe.

About CURIOSOIL

CURIOSOIL (Awakening Soil Curiosity to Catalyse Soil Literacy) is a four-year, EU funded project focused on enhancing soil education. Led by Universidade de Aveiro, the project addresses the critical need for a better understanding of soil amid increasing human pressures on this essential resource. Using hands-on Soil Experiences, CURIOSOIL aims to deepen public comprehension of soil dynamics, establishing a connection between individuals and soil. By collaboratively developing educational products, curriculum standards, and teacher training programs, CURIOSOIL increases the appreciation of soil value and aligns with the EU Mission “A Soil Deal for Europe.” This initiative cultivates soil literacy, engages citizens, and promotes sustainable soil practices. The project aims to integrate soil health into EU school curricula by 2030, fostering awareness, knowledge, and behavioural changes for a resilient and climate-smart future.

About ISRIC

ISRIC is an independent, science-based foundation accredited as the World Data Centre for Soils. Established in 1966, it provides quality-assessed soil information and knowledge to address global environmental and societal challenges. ISRIC is home to the World Soil Museum and the World Soil Reference Collection.

Through its collections, exhibitions, educational programmes, and outreach activities, the World Soil Museum facilitates research and promotes awareness and understanding of the world’s soils, their diversity, functions, and importance to society and the environment. Engaging audiences both online and in person, the Museum makes soil knowledge accessible to all and fosters greater appreciation of the vital role soils play in a sustainable future.
