Micromorphological collections

ISRIC manages several micromorphological collections:

  • The ISRIC systematic collection – 3372 large thin sections from the profiles described in the ISRIC Soil Information System (ISIS, now WoSIS). This collection is part of the soil reference collection as the thin sections were sampled from the profile walls of reference collection sites.

The ISRIC collections also include other, orphaned, collections:

  • The Schmidt - Lorenz collection - Contains over 15000 small thin sections of soils, mainly from Europe, Africa and Australia

  • The Jongerius - STIBOKA collection - Over 6000 thin sections and blocks, mainly from Dutch and European soils and sediments. The collection has been established by the late Prof A. Jongerius, former Head of the Department of Micropedology and Mineralogy of the Dutch Soil Survey Institute (STIBOKA) in Wageningen and further expanded by micromorphologist Dr M Kooistra.

The unique micromorphological collections of soils from around the world may be viewed on demand.

Thin section from a soil from the Vosges in France. It is an Umbrisol (soil with dark and organic matter rich topsoil and low plant nutrients, i.e. base saturation). The thin section is from the 34–49 layer in the profile (Bw2 horizon; gravelly loamy sand gravelly with fine gravel granite fragments)

A document with translation of micromorphological terms by Prof. Dr. G. Stoops can be found here.
