Short description: This course provides an general introduction to international soil classification. It includes: 1) concepts of soil classification systems, 2) terminology used in classification, 3) soil classification for interpretive uses.

Guest lecturers
Target audience: BSc and MSc level students in soil science, and students of other environmental sciences with a basic knowledge of soils
Requirements: Knowledge requirements: Basic knowledge of soils, geography, biology and chemistry. Good knowledge of English.
Programme: Lectures (each of about 45 min) on: 1) Introduction to soil classification, 2) World Reference Base for Soil Resources, 3) assessment of soils, 4) Field exercise soil classification.
Exercises and visits: Exercises in the ISRIC World Soil museum. Field soil classification.
Objective: After this introductory course, participants should have a (general) understanding of: 1) terminology and concepts in soil classification, 2) World Reference Base for Soil Resources, 3) The groupings of major soils in the world, 4) use of soil classification for interpretive purposes.
